How to choose a trailer for your equipment

The right trailer starts with what you haul and what you tow it with. Bring the load, dimensions, and vehicle details into the same conversation.

Make a complete load list.

Write down the equipment you plan to haul and its actual operating weight, including attachments, tools, and other cargo. Record its length, width, and loading requirements. If you haul more than one machine, describe the combination.

A photograph helps explain the job, but a model number and accurate measurements give the dealer more to work with. Ask about usable deck dimensions, clearances, ramps, and tie-down locations.

Match the trailer style to the job.

A utility trailer, equipment hauler, tilt trailer, and dump trailer solve different loading and hauling needs. Tell the team how often you load, where you work, and what matters most about the loading process.

Compare the exact Big Tex and Liberty configurations, rather than assuming that two trailers of similar length have the same capacity or equipment. Ask for the rating labels, empty weight, and the owner’s manual for the specific trailer.

Bring your tow-vehicle information.

The trailer is only part of the towing combination. Bring your vehicle’s exact configuration, published ratings, and hitch information. Have the dealer help review the complete setup; a trailer recommendation is not permission to exceed any component’s limit.

Our GVWR and payload guide explains the distinction between total trailer weight and cargo capacity. Final loading and towing decisions should follow the manufacturers’ instructions for your equipment.

Send a useful brief.

Include your equipment model, loaded weight, overall dimensions, tow vehicle, loading needs, and budget. Ask what is currently available and what the complete quote includes.
